I asked my dad because most summers I want to die with shame when he insists on wearing WHITE TOWELLING SOCKS (aaaargh) with his sandals....his answer was "well my feet sweat and the sandals rub if I don't wear socks!". His feet and toenails are so disgusting though, I don't blame him for wanting to cover them at all times.
The people who wear socks with sandals just have no shame. Or fashion sense

I think they do it for comfort.. it's certainly not for aesthetic reasons.
My dad was in the merchant navy for his entire life and most guys wore sandals.. you couldn't go to the mess with bare feet.. (it's the same in the armed forces).. this partly explains the origin of the socks with sandals thing?
I own a couple of pairs of good sandals.. I live next to a beautiful quiet beach and they let you go barefoot without the risk of damaging the soles of your feet.. I would never wear socks with them..

What kind of question is that? But I'm only here to answer the answer that you seek. Some where socks with sandals because they are ashamed of their feet. Others just feel as though their feet are unbearable.

It's not written in stone that you can't wear socks with sandals. If someone does that, they are just making a fashion statement. They are being unique and who knows, they might start a fasion trend.

the true answer is three fold
1. To avoid people seeing thier feet that maybe un atractive 2. so the leather of the sandle doesn't blister the foot and 3. so sand or small objects don't geton thier feet which is all due to the desire of comfort

I think it's more to do with the fact that they want to keep their feet cool with the sandals but are worried about the smell, so they compromise.

Because we choose to!
Some people have ugly feet.
Also it stops your feet getting dirty while still getting 'air' to them, albeit filtered by the sock.
