Liberalism favours progress and reform (such as gay marriage), liberals are generally broad minded and open to new ideas. Liberals are against the intrusion of the state into civil liberties, but are usually for the intrusion of the state into the private sector, usually to give the poor social security or to nationalise healthcare. There are very few true liberals in the US.

Conservatism favours the old style of doing things, and are averse to change. They are very averse to new ideas, and will frequently frown upon anyone who doesn't conform to the 'norm' They favour tax breaks for the rich, so they can get richer and stimulate the economy - and as a result of this they cannot spend money on social welfare. Conservatives are frequently religious. The typical American conservative is MUCH more conservative than the typical European one.

There is no difference between the Democrat and Republican parties except the candidates who will stand. Even if they did have a different policy (which is unheard of - both parties try to appeal to everyone) they would just cheat and lie their way out of delivering it. If the parties WERE genuine however, the Republicans are conservative, and the Democrats liberal - although compared to Europe the Democrats are more conservative than the conservatives.

Liberals are the Left, social tolerance, responsibility shifted away from the individual and more towards the whole("it takes a village...") looser moral values.
Democrats are a political representation of Liberalism, social programs, more government control, high taxation, welfare, bureaucracies, etc.

Republicans are a political representation of Conservatism, social standards set to religious morals, minimal government control, less taxation, big business/corporation friendly.
Conservatives are the Right, individual rights and responsibilities,
within strict moral values.

There are other groups too, Independents (made up of mostly Moderates from either party), Libertarians, Green Party, etc.

Vote based on your knowledge and conscience, not from ads or propaganda. Do your own research.

Republican Party has been the more socially conservative and economically libertarian of the two major parties, and it has closer ties to both Wall Street (large corporations) and Main Street (locally owned businesses

The Democratic Party advocates most civil liberties, social freedoms, equal rights, equal opportunity, and a free enterprise system tempered by government intervention. The Party believes that government should play a role in alleviating poverty and social injustice, even if that means a larger role for government and progressive taxation to pay for social services.

Good for you! Take Earl's advice and decide for your self. Do the research and watch the news on All stations and think about what you are hearing. Take with a grain of salt what you see here. Most of it is very biased one way or the other. Hopefully, you'll not be intimidated or dismayed but swayed by what you learn.

Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value.

Broadly speaking, contemporary liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, free public education, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected. [2] In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed[3].

Conservatism is a political philosophy that necessitates a defense of established values or the status quo.

While not in itself an ideology, it is a political philosophy that is determined almost entirely by its context. Defined in part as an emphasis on tradition as a source of wisdom that goes beyond what can be demonstrated or even explicitly stated.

* In political science, a democrat is an advocate, follower, or proponent of democracy. One who advocates or practices social equality is commonly referred to as a democrat.

* In politics, Democrat is used in some countries to refer to a member, delegate, or supporter of a Democratic political party such as the Democratic Party in the United States or the Australian Democrats in Australia.

Republican may refer to:

* The form of government known as a republic

* Groups advocating the abolition of a monarchy, for example, the Australian Republican Movement and the British republican movement (see Republicanism)

the answers have not given you much truth

they have given you the general idea of what people mean by conservative etc, but not the reality

there is the face, the appearance, the reputation, and then there is the reality - it is not enough to say: this party says they are for such and such, so i will vote for them - you have to judge by what they do - you have to get figures, hard facts - and they can be hard to find - most political parties are hypocrites - they are not what they seem

there is their face, and their heart

there is the rationalisation and the reason

there is the selfdeception, the selfimage, and the reality

gore vidal said that both parties are the same and they represent 4% of the people - i think this is true

for some mysterious reason, the people have let the fundamental of democracy and freedom and peace and happiness go out of control

the fundamental is justice in pay, avoidance of wealth concentration, which is always unjust [because work is not concentrated, and justice is equal pay for equal work]

money is power - so overpay is overpower - ie, tyranny, undemocracy - politicians are today all rich, all plutocrats, members of a ruling, thieving class

what happened to liberty, equality, fraternity? - the people didnt protect it - the price of liberty is vigilance - vigilance to see that wealth/power doesnt concentrate - the people didnt pay the price - liberty equality fraternity [friendliness] are gone, long gone

was it that the people were just ignorant of their needs? - it is hard to believe that people couldnt see that overpay is overpower, overpower is tyranny and undemocracy

did the people put faith in the constitution? - they didnt remember that the laws are like spiders webs, which do not catch the powerful - to have no one above the law, you have to have no one more powerful than the law, you have to have power spread democratically, justly, in proportion to work - to have a govt for by of the people, there has to be no one more powerful than the people - there has to be no wealth/power concentration - there has to be vigilance against 'the rich get richer' etc [which is unjust, which is unequal pay for equal work, which is taking out of society more wealth than you put in by your work]

i think the people thought: land of the free, hey, im free to get stinking rich, im not prevented by tyrants from getting rich - so the people put no limit on fortunes [which would have been just, because contribution by work is limited] and so wealth/power conccentrated, and liberty equality fraternity [social brotherliness] were lost

the people have never in all history prevented, or even known to try to prevent, wealth concentrating - do they like slavery? - do they like supporting, funding the overpaid and overpowerful? - do they prefer to have someone else rich and powerful at their expense?

why do they never notice that no one can work much harder than the average person - maybe up to 30% harder than the average person - and yet the biggest fortune is $50 billion and half of americans have fortunes less than $2000 - why do they never notice this, and protest it?

why do they see no danger to democracy and freedom in others having limitless wealth, limitless power?

why is there no disgust, no hatred, no righteous anger, for the superoverpaid, the superoverpowerful, the unjustly rich, the thieves of earnings, of democracy and peace?

why is it that people think the poor are thieves, and lazy and irresponsible, and the rich are good, and hardworking, and responsible? - a thief is one who has a lot of money, a lot more than anyone can earn by work

strange, strange, strange

is it that people see the upside of wealth and not the downside? - do they think that if one person is overpaid, everyone can be overpaid? - do they think if one person can win the lottery, everyone can win the lottery? - do they not think at all? - do they think about money with an irrational part of the brain? -

how mad is it to have pay for a fortnight's work from a 1000th to a million times the average pay? - and think it right and good? - and see no wrong in it, no danger? - is it that when people hear of a billion people being paid less than a dollar a day, 3 billion people being paid less than $2 a day, they assume justice, and so assume that the person is working very poorly to get so little, and that $1, $2, a day is just?

where are their heads????????????????

there is enough for every family working average hard to have US$75,000 a year - ie peace and plenty for all - and we have 90% of people on 10th - 1000th of that - extreme robbery, extreme tyranny, extreme violence, extreme damage to everyone's quality of life

since people are that superdumb, that superselfdestructive, can we reasonably hope that anything be got through their heads?

how obvious is it that if you have a community where everyone is working, everyone getting fairpay for their work, no overpay or underpay, that it is going to totally wreck the community happiness to have extreme inequality of pay?

so i say: the only thing that is worth backing is any plan that faces this reality - without that, it doesnt matter what you do, you are going to have turmoil, corruption, tyranny, ignorance, misinformation, evil, misery, violence, deception, hypocrisy - any good you do is going to be swept away in the raging conflict - anything you think is true is going to be false - because truth is the first casualty of war, and you have war if you have injustice, unlimited fortunes for the few

the golden rule is a hardnosed practical rule: you cannot injure without conflict, without equal and opposite injury - injustice in pay is extreme injury

there is plenty for everyone

Partisan bickering is divisive and a waste of time and is exactly what our government wants.

There is no difference between a republican or a democrat candidate anymore, they will both lie to you , they both come with a price tag and they both are puppets for corporate interests.

VOTE FOR THE THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE OF YOUR CHOICE.

Liberal=Democrats (mostly)

Conservative=Republicans (mostly)

Dems favor more spending on social services like healthcare, welfare, education.

Rupublicans favor more tax breaks and tighter social controls (against gay marrage, against violent videogames)
