"Provident" is positive, but in the wrong way, and does not convey the irony.
"Predictable" is even more sardonic then ironic!

"Incongrous" does kind of describe the dismay of the incident. Maybe I could describe the incident as "incongrous and ironic", that seems to removes the "sardonic" from "ironic".

Steve Irwin's death was the luck of the draw. He was involoved in a dangerous line of work, and he knew it. His death was unavoidable, given that he continually thrust himself into situations where wild animals react normally to perceived threats.

As my dermatologist says, "You have a 50/50 percent chance of getting skin cancer when you spend a lot of time outdoors." I live in the desert, and love playing golf and swimming. I know the consequences, and am willing to take my chances. At least now I use suncreen. I come from the Baby Oil and Iodine era...

Steve Irwin also knew the consequences. He had a great respect for wildlife. However, wildlife is just that: WILD. There is no way to predict what a wild animal will do, although some people will continue to play the odds.

Steve's "number just came up" sooner than anyone expected.

Ironic...?
If he had been killed by a Crocodile, then i would say Ironic
The Ocean was not Steves element and even he said that death would probably take him there.
A deep "Sadness" is probably the most revealing word of how i feel about this.
"Surprised" was my first reaction.
i was "Confused" after the initial "Shock" and still feel a mind numbing sensation when i think about it.
I don't think there is a more poignant word to describe it.
but i will keep trying.
The world has Lost a Great Advocate for Animals. (especially those misundersood and feared Reptiles that he loved).
He was a great showman who dragged the world into the realization that Animals need us humans to protect them
I hope there is Someone Out There that can take his place

RIP Steve....we will miss you

I would have to say foreordained. It means sort of predetermined or fated. Dictionary.com gives one meaning as: "a sense of predestinate inevitability about it." Sentence example: With his fearlessness around animals, it was foreordained that he would die because of one.
