I take it that you mean faucets? For the discoloration, my daughter once used tomato catsup on a brass bed frame and it did magic. For the lime try LCR it is good for lime, calcium and rust. A old discarded tooth brush is excellent to clean around the edge that get all gunkey. Happy cleaning!

If you have limescale round your taps, soak kitchen towels or rags in white vinegar and wrap round your taps covering the offending lime-scale completely and making sure that the area is saturated. Cover with a plastic bag in order that the rags stay wet. After a few hours, you will be able to wash the limescale off.
To clean brass and bronze, mix half teaspoon of salt and half a cup of white vinegar, then use flour to make a paste. Apply thickly, leave for 30 mins, rinse off.
To clean chrome, wipe with vinegar, rinse with water.

Threading Taps are made of Carbide steel. The coating is Nitride...Hence, the Yellow color. In order to produce a threaded hole, the Tap must be stronger than the material that the Tap is cutting into. The Machine tool selection to machine material is a complex technology and requires a great deal of expertise. Tool life is a critical cost consideration in the machining of materials. Thanks.

brass is cleaned by using brasso or similar product - it removes the oxidation which is black and then u polish with soft dry cloth.
limescale is easily removed using vinegar - the acid breaks the calcium carbonate down.

I bet somebody used ammonia on them. No way to change that, not that I know of, anyway!
Reason I know? I did it in my brand new house!
