Certain brain problems can cause the transfer from temporary to permanent memory to fail. A shock can do it, but there are other things that'll do it.

I have a friend I've knowm for three years and I know nothing about him. He does the same thing. I think its a self - defense mechanism, meaning he doesn't like talking about it, or he isn't used to someone caring. Try not to bring it up in public as well. Private conversations are private for a reason.
