In a Vauxhall, you may well find its nothing to do with the cambelt but is in actual fact the big ends, which doesn't give it long for this world. Other possibility is I had an Omega that did a similar thing, it turned out to be a rotater was physically bashing the cam-belt on each rotation, that is if the sound seems t be coming from the front of the engine. Even so that will wear through the cam-belt before too long.

Time for you to get a 2nd opinion.
Knocking in my experience, is NEVER good, and is usually a precursor to a catastrophic failure. Your cam shaft is belt driven and the next question is, how long since it was last replaced? This is a critical part in many engines and if it fails can result in total engine failure when pistons run into valves which have stopped moving. If it is indeed tha timing belt which is making the noise and it suddenly started, SOMETHING caused the change. Maybe the belt is on the way to failure from old age. Best to be safe than sorry, so get another opinion from another mechanic. You may have an entirely different problem. Maybe you burned a bearing in a connecting rod and the knock is from there. Yes, time to get a 2nd opinion.

Is it a fast tapping noise or a slow knocking noise? Is the noise coming from the top side of the motor, or does it sound like its way down low?
If its a faster tapping, it may be a stuck lifter. which isn't a good thing, but not something that is going to kill the engine in a day or two. Maybe try running some oil treatment through (SeaFoam, or Marvel Mystery Oil, or Rislone) these products are designed to help loosen sticky lifters.
If its a slower deeper knock... You may have a bad crank, or rod bearing. This is not good news, and unattended can lead to catastrophic engine failure at the most inopportune time.

I've just had to get rid of my m reg corsa for the same problem. It was something to do with the cambelt and camshaft and unfortunately both would cost more than the car to have fixed, hence I got a new car.
When did you last have a cambelt on it? If it was more than 4 years or 20,000 miles ago then you need to get it changed ASAP before it snaps and takes the whole engine out with it. Cambelt will cost you about £120 (According to nationwide auto centres who I took mine to) but what I would advise is depending on the mileage and if there are any other niggles on the car, it may be more cost effective just to get a new one as corsas tend to go down fast when they start getting older.

If the cam belts making any noise then get it checked and sorted...fast. Take it to a different garage.
But first look under your bonnet and see if it's any thing obvious, It could be a number of things from a loose water reservoir to a broken engine mount brackets.

NO! change your cam belt asap, if its perished or damaged in any way it could fail at any Time resulting in probable contact with valves and pistons, a big bang and v.expensive repair bill. if it is metal knocking on metal sound, it will just give up quite soon if you don't get it looked at. rule of thumb, if there is knocking from the engine, its not a good sign.

It could be several things, depending on where exactly the tapping is or knocking. If it's only happening when the engine is idling and you're not going no-where it's the tappets. They need adjusting (garage job). If it's when you drive it could be the bushes are worn and need to be replaced (garage job) or even the anti-roll bar bolts are loose or snapped (yet another garage job).

Sounds like a possible main bearing failure when the garage did the emissions test,as if it hadent been used for a while and then MOT'D the filter was probably part blocked thus compromising the oil flow =engine failure.

could desire to be the starter automobiles jammed. a non-provide up noise ability the batteries nevertheless have been given a fee in it. have you ever tried bump beginning it by pushing and utilising grasp and gears. If it starts this way then you definately will prefer a clean motor

sounds like the tappets put a cleaner through your oil which will clear out the hydraulic tappets then only use semi synthetic oil which is what this car was designed to run on
