It is one of the influences making trekking in Nepal a pastime popular with a significant number of (mainly Western) foreigners and an important source of foreign exchange for Nepal.

It helped the self-esteem of New Zealand as its own country rather than just a colony and so indirectly inspired NZers to other achievements such as winning the America's Cup.
