It has inspired countless people to learn to mountaineer, a signiificant number of them to achieve targets of their own in the field such as climbing all the Munros (mts over 3000 ft) in Scotland, and several thousand to climb some or all of Everest itself. It is one of the influences making trekking in Nepal a pastime popular with a significant number of (mainly Western) foreigners and an important source of foreign exchange for Nepal.

It helped the self-esteem of New Zealand as its own country rather than just a colony and so indirectly inspired NZers to other achievements such as winning the America's Cup.
