Some do wear jeans but when I've gone to see a play I dress up totally and it's fun. Black dress with little black pumps and a nice little purse with my diamond earrings and necklace. If it's chilly out then I'll wear a Shaw, not a jacket.

I would suggest NOT wearing jeans. If you are going to a matinee they wear a casual, yet dressy outfit. For instance, a skirt and a nice top. But, if you go to a night performance, I would suggest wearing something extra nice, like a dress. But, yes, some theaters won't let you wear jeans. Trust me, I have gone to a matinee, and someone wore jeans and got kicked out. Wow, speaking of broadway, I want to go see one right now.(The Phantom of the Opera is, by far the best play ever. Even though that might not be the play you are seeing, I highly suggest it. It is the best.) :)

Jeans are pretty much accepted so long as they're not too faded or ripped up. Dress the way you'd dress to have lunch at a nice restaurant with your friend's parents.
Remember that matinees are generally attended by tourists and older patrons, so there won't be too many people who'll be judging you.

In this day and age it's probably jockstrap, combat boots and a single strand of pearls - for both sexes!!!
Seriously, "business casual" is probably just fine. I attend many, many shows out here in San Fransissyco [organize theater groups for fun] and usually just wear black jeans and a nice shirt. Ladies tend to dress casual as well.
Enjoy your matinee!!
pee ess - Just had a group for CHORUS LINE prior-to-Broadway run in SF [it's great] and planning for the opening tour of JERSEY BOYS. Come on out to the Left Coast and join our merry group.

The truth is you can wear whatever you like, and no one is going to say anything. In the past it was considered appropriate to get dressed up for the theater, but as society has become more and more casual, the rules seemed to have relaxed. Personally, I always wear business casual attire to the theater (which does not include jeans), but again, it's up to you. I'd avoid shorts (or a skirt) as some of the theaters can get cold.

Since a matinee is generally a daytime performance, I would go with neat but casual dress. A nice skirt and blouse for her, sports jacket and slacks for him.

Even when going to the Phantom at night, we wore jeans and nobody looked at us twice. If you are more comfortable in jeans, then yeah its certainly fine for a matinee.

Jeans generally aren't appropriate. Wear something nice--"Sunday best" type stuff.
