Tue, 04 Nov 2003 - An international team of astronomers have discovered a new galaxy colliding with our own Milky Way. This new galaxy, Canis Major, is located only 42,000 light years away from the centre of the Milky Way - it's our new "closest galaxy".

It's technically the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, which orbits the Milky Way at a distance of about 42000 light years from the center of the galaxy, and a current distance of about 25000 light years from Earth. But among galaxies not directly orbiting our own, it's the Andromeda Galaxy. Andromeda is about 2.5 million light years away, and it may collide with the Milky Way in approximately three billion years.
