You can try and do the divorce with out a lawyer. They have "kits" on the internet. BUt basically you need a lawyer. If you have kids you can plan on being really really poor (emphasis on the really part).
CHeck out the following web site. It can answer you question and many more. I can't say enough about haveing kids and walking into a divorce court as a man. The judge will ask you one very important question, "Do you have a penis?" IF you make any north-south movement of your head then it will be all your fault. This is not a joke (just ask a divorced father). You need to check out this site before you proceed any further.

Most attorneys offer an initial free consultation in cases of bankruptcy. Check your local yellow pages for ads stating as such. Maybe you could get your divorce questions answered while you are fishing for info on bankruptcy, if you have alot of unsecured debt. And find out what the attorney would charge to handle your divorce case. For free info on divorce, you might check with the Family Court system in your state. Many of them have resources onsite and people to answer your questions, as well as general rules and paperwork.

Besides Legal Aid there are many lawyers who do pro-bono work. Call a lawyer referral service in your local area.

probably the reason for the divorce; she doesn't know how to manage money. it's a common illness.
She needs to talk to a divorce attorney, and see if she can set up a payment plan with him/her.
