Go to any fish shop, fish restaurant or fishing pier where you should be able to get for nothing some Whelk shells. Don't worry about the size, get various and let the hermits choose which one they like...............

If the shells have a round opening, then measure the opening and then get shells that are 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch larger opening then the one they are in.

If they are in a D shaped opening shell, then measure across the shell from the flat part to the rounded edge and then add 1/4 to 1/2 inch bigger.

They also like lighter shells, then the heavier shells. You can usually get shells at Walmart in the craft section, Hobby Lobby or other craft stores. Ebay has alot of shells.
www.naplesseashellcompany.com is a very good one to get shells from. They are awesome to talk to and work with on getting shells. They are used to hermie owners needing shells for the hermit crabs and can help you out alot.

grab a handful of shells and put them in the tank, the hermit crab will grab the best one no worries. You can buy them at the pet shop. Also hermit crabs often get shells way bigger then they need so they can keep it longer. Its no big deal if they choose one to big.

Hermit Crabs DO NOT HAVE SHELLS ! they use the shells they find - note the word HERMIT !

you can buy assorted shells all over the Internet just type in SEASHELLS FOR SALE they will choose the shells based on their need not your dads measurements

The opening of the new shell needs to be slightly larger than the largest claw. Put several shells in. They like to choose their own.
