Bill collectors sure have a bad rep. Unfortunately, much of it is deserved. Even if you are one of the professionals, it still is a tough job. I doubt anyone is happy to talk to you. It's got to be a demanding career.

I've had two dealings with bill collectors. One was on a medical payment that my insurance coverage was denying. It took a lot of back and forth, and two 3-way conference calls to get it resolved, but the collector was always courteous with me, and quite testy with the insurance people when they did not understand what mistake they had made.

The second was a sleazy collector calling me saying he need to contact my next door neighbor on an "urgent matter," and was asking me to walk over there and give them his number. I told him I wasn't passing any message unless he told me who he worked for and why. That was pretty much the end of the conversation.

I do some collections work for the company that I work for. It's just amazing though that when I call, they are on vacation or out doing some else besides working. They always seem to have the money to enjoy themselves but no money to pay their bills.

By the way, I found this website and now I do most of my collecing through the mail...with follow-up phone calls. It seems to work better.
