In my area, the music buffs recognise Indie as such...
Independent record labels – either strictly independent, or an independent subdivision of a larger label. In the 1980’s there was an entire genre called indie, which was an affectionate name for British alternative rock. Back then, indie labels and bands were fiercely anti-mainstream. The Indie scene was concerned about preserving their unique sound, which was unknown to most of the public and ignored largely by radio. And true to their form, many artistes rarely featured their photos on albums, preferring obscure artwork.
Factory Records – home to Joy Division and New Order.
Sub Pop – first home to Nirvana, before they went major.
Mute – home to Depeche Mode.
Note: my references are really old school, so do bear with me.

Not signed to a big label yet.
Green Day used to be Indie when they were with lookout records (a small label)
then they signed with Warner and were not Indie anymore they became mainstream. Some people called them sell outs. But usually when an Indie band gets an offer from a major label, they take it to further their career!
