Common perception is that they are poor, pathetic people.
In a town I used to live in, the owner of a big mortuary started crossdressing after hours. He used to be politically active but then when he gave money to the party or candidates they used to thank him and give it back.
Milton Berle did cross dressing on television in its early days, but he made it funny. Andy Williams does a scene in his Branson show where he is wearing a Carmen Miranda-type attire while singing Manilow's Copa Cabana. There was a TV comedy, whose name escaped me, of a cop being pestered by a nerdy-geeky guy nextdoor who is infatuated with his daughter even though she can't stand him (as if anyone really did)--the cop would sometimes be in drag when patrolling a park or shopping center for a rapist or such. These amusements help mollify and lighten our perception of crossdressing.
The real strange dogs, though, are transvestites, which is crossdressing on steriods. That is commonly perceived as homosexuals while crossdressers are commonly perceived as straight--sort of.

Who cares what the public opinion of them is, they have a right to be what they want to be, they seem like fun people and how boring the world would be if we were all the same.

Ive no idea what the general public think, but my opinion is that if you are happy and comfortable with who you are then its nothing to do with anyone else.

live and let live , that is what's wrong with the world today . If everyone would worry about him/herself everything will be alright.
just as long as we respect one another it's fine with me . To be honest I've seen some guys in drag that would put some female to shame.

The general public doesn't understand cross dressers and thinks all of them are gay or transgendered.

I don't mind. as long as they are convincing and don't scar my eyes from ugliness.
They have a right to do whatever they want though, so I can't really be selfish and say they can't dress that way just because I don't think its attractive.
