an aquarium heater for my fish? I just went into Petco in order to get a fish for my kids and the lady told me that I needed a heater...However the container I purchased to fit the fish into is small and it doesnt seem like it will fit anywhere in the container?! Does anyone know if this is absolutley necessary? Im purchasing the fish on Saturday because she said the water needs to be filtering for at least 24-48 hours before...

It depends on the fish you are buying. There are cold water fish and warm water fish, more commonly referred to tropical fish. Cold water fish include most goldfish. Just about everything else would need a heater. The water should be in the mid to upper 70's usually, depending on species. It helps to do a little research on the specific fish you are getting. A small heater should not cost much at all, and would fit in your tank.

Actuallyyy... it's not necessay usually. But the thing u said about filtering water, that's true. As more the water is clean, it's good for the fish. That store lady would of course said to u to buy a lot of stuffs, that's her business. Dont trust them. The best way to know about all those stuff is to follow at least two books, so that u can compare ideas and knowledges. But it'll take time though. Here's a quick tip: u can buy a cheap and not bad heater just as a backup (for winter or too much cold in this fall). Even if you buy one u'll just need to keep it on for a few hours and then a few hours later again. Too much heat is harmful for any kind of fish. At least it's water, it's supposed to be cold. We are just trying to make it's comfortable for them.

it depends on what kind of fish you are getting. some fish live quite well at room temp, othes need a temp of about 80 f. And actually, you DO need to filter the water for a while, just to prevent bad bacteria and amonia from building up. If you are getting fish from the pet stpre, just check the temp of the tank they are in. if it is less than 75 f they will be fine without one. And if you are in Calgary, Alberta Canada, and want guppies, I'l give you some for free.

It depends on the type of fish you are getting. If its a betta, no. If its a goldfish no, but if you are getting tropical fish then yes. Here is a website that will help you determine what you need for your new fish.

the first gal is correct, but also if the container is small enough and your home warm enough it could be alright ....get an aquarium thermometer and if you can keep it in the safe zone without a heater you will be fine
