the original six were:
Toronto Maple Leafs
Montreal Canadiens
Boston Bruins
New York Rangers
Detroit Red Wings
Chicago Blackhawks
There were a couple of other teams that played during the early days as well, but since they didn't survive, they don't get counted.
Some of these include:
Montreal Maroons
New York Americans (i think these guys became the Rangers, though)
Toronto St. Pats

we call them original six because in todays NHL they are the longest running franchises in the league now. Montreal, Toronto, Boston, New York Rangers, Chicago and Detroit were the NHL from 1942 to 1967 but the league was formed on November 1st 1917.
In its original constitution there were 5 teams in the league. In 1917 the teams in the NHL were the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs and the Toronto Arenas.
Soon after, due to miscellaneous events, teams folded and moved right up to 1942 but six were able to cope to keep the league alive until 1967 when the NHL expanded to 6 new teams to make the league 12.

Since your question doesn't refer to the "Original 6" I'm going to assume that you actually want to know who the first teams in the NHL were. Which were not the commonly known "Original 6". The NHA (National Hockey Association founded in 1909) was reconstituted in 1917 and renamed the National Hockey League. It actually consisted of 5 teams: Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and Quebec Bulldogs. However the bull dogs did not play in the 1917 - 1918 season so some say there were only 4 the first year.

Wow! You people need to look at the hockey history books. A couple of you know your hockey. But,even though Boston,Chicago,Detroit,Montreal,NY Rangers, and Toronto are classified as the "Original Six",they are not the first six NHL teams.
I myself, don't know the exact six teams that were in the league first. I do know that the Canadiens, the Montreal Maroons,Quebec Bulldogs, and the New York Americans were a few of them.
Also, before the "Original Six" there were teams like the Toronto Arenas, the Winnipeg Victorias, the Vancouver Millionares, the Ottawa Silver Seven, the Philadelphia Quackers, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the original Ottawa Senators team.

The original 6 are commonly known to be the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Blackhawks, RedWings, and Bruins.
But, this is not actually true, these are just the teams to survive the great depression.
The NHL had 5 teams when it was born, the founding teams were the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs and the Toronto Arenas.

The Boston Bruins were the first American franchise, and the other three American teams joined the league in an earlier expansion that enlarged the league to ten teams, its maximum size before 1967. But all six of them do date from the league's first decade, and the six teams formed the entire league for 25 years after such franchises as the Maroons, Americans, and the original Ottawa Senators were bankrupted by the Great Depression.
founded teams in order:
Ottawa Senators 1893 to 1934 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottawa_Senators_%28Original%29
Montreal Canadiens (1909) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Canadiens
Boston Bruins (1924) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Bruins
Montreal Maroons 1924 to 1938 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Maroons
Pittsburgh Pirates 1925 to 1931 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Pirates_%28hockey%29
New York Americans 1925 to 1942 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Americans
Detroit Red Wings (1926) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Red_Wings
Chicago Black hawks (1926) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Blackhawks
New York Rangers (1926) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Rangers
Toronto Maple Leafs (1927) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_Maple_Leafs
and from 1942-43 season till the 1967 expansion there's only been six teams. which are known as the Original Six. yes sure there was other teams in and out from 1893 but this are the more talked about teams in the early years.
