Tyra Banks wasn't real skinny, and she was the sexiest

The fashion world is full of thin models because most designers (based on the belief of past greats) see models as mere hangers for their clothes. Another person answering said that they have to be good looking or they wouldn't be models. That isn't true at all. Most models are very odd and even unattractive looking. Take Grace Jones for example. Those who watch professional fashion shows know that most models today are thin girls that do not draw away from the clothing. They don't even enhance it, cause you know my curvy size 6/7 will look much better in a D&G or a Gucci dress than any size -2 ever could.

Actually, the era of super thin models is ending. Style is directed towards women, and the fashion industry is slowly figuring out that real women cant wear what looks good on a size 0 female. Actually, we'd look hideous in what they wear!

I just read this from People magazine "In Madrid, anyway. The city council announce that every model participating in Madrid Fashion Week must have a body mass index of at least 18, which translates into 123lbs. for a 5'9" model. Will other countries follow suit?"

To me, thats still too skinny. The normal height for someone that weight is 5'3". I just wish they'd stop shoving "Thin is In" down our throats because NO ITS NOT! NORMAL HEALTHY WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL!!. If I were a man, I'd rather sleep with a pillow then a stick!

To Paolo: Honestly...you sicken me. [enter spitting sounds here]. I'm extraordinary because I'm me. I don't have to be "pleasing" to the eye to be one of a kind. Thin models are gross, and are NOT pleasing to the eye. Ew! Ew! Ew! I'm 5'3" 190lbs and I'm beautiful, and you wanna know why? Because I'm confident of how I look, because I have a shape to my body, and because I'm a woman. Any woman can take a great picture from the right angle, or if they have the right make up on, or the right clothes. I have some good pictures, and some horrid pictures. Besides, you're a typical male and you can just enjoy your rails for the rest of your life, and Paolo, stop being sterotypical because I am right now, and I'm thinking "Paolo, your pony tail looks gross and the long, slicked back hair went out in the 80's!"

Sorry to everyone else...I got a little ticked off! LOL

I heard a talent agent say once that it is a requirment to be thin for certain things but not everything. One reason why models must be tall is because clothing hangs and looks better on a tall person than a small person. I wish we could see normal people model so we wouldn't compare our self to these images of super super skinny models. Also I don't like my husband to look at tv, magazines and whatever else and compare me to them or think that I should or could be more skinny. Also, I think a lot of men prefer to have a woman with boobs and a waist. They want to grab something or hold something if that makes sense.

as a fashion photographer i can assert that thin tall models look esthetically more pleasing in photographs than "Avarage" sized women. Being a model is being someone out of the ordinary, extra tall, extra slim extra photogenic, extra attractive. many years ago Body Shop had a a wonderful advertising campaign that stated something along these lines...THERE ARE 6 BILLION WOMEN ON THIS PLANET AND ONLY 12 SUPERMODELS...
Models are not ordinary pople neither do we want them to be ordinary, they need to be extraordinary. As for the arguements that the girls are often anorexic in almost 30 years of working in this industry i have only ever come across 2 anorexic girls both of which were striving to become fashion catwwalk models and thought that by being thin that would be enough, but infact they had been rejected from every London Modelling agency as they were too short to be considered..their failure had nothing to do with their weight, and even if they had attained their oercieved ideal they would still have had been rejected. Do they look pretty to me? Well , photographically they serve their purpose effectively and some are yes, pretty. Do I find them sexually attractive? Some yes, but my choice of life partner is in my opinion the most beautiful woman I have ever seen yet she would fail miserably as a model for being to short and too fat. Do I like the girls, yes they are very pleasant and nice to be with.

I hate them. They're not real models to me because for one...they don't fill the clothes out. How is the buyer supposed to know how the clothes will fit, where they'll stretch and not stretch if the people that are wearing them look like a rail? Their faces look pretty because you can see their bone structure as it's well defined from not eating, but that's where it ends. They have no figures most of the time, and I never see the barbaric outfits designers have them wear, in stores. It's not a fashion industry, it's more of a "let's have a stick figure drag our clothes on the floor" industry.

I'll probably be hated, but here goes...

Fashion models are not supposed to be beauty pageant contestants! And models are not hired just so that men can go gaga over them! Duh! The main focus of the runway is to sell - clothes!

From a technical/ practical point of view - models are living clothes hangers. Hangers are designed the way they are so that almost any rag would hang nicely on them!

And if you’re wondering why some models look so plain – here’s another secret. The best models are like chameleons. The styling, makeup and clothes are these chameleons’ colours.

Don't get me wrong - models are people and we should respect them. Slim people rule!

I find most models look pretty scary! They are stick thin, and the hair and make up is horrible. Why do they have to put so much shadow on that they look like cadavers!? What I don't get is, why do they design clothes for women who are 95 pounds, the average American women weighs 40 pounds more than that.

I know what you mean, someone should take these girls out to McDonald's and buy them a happy meal. I mean they look ill, My last girlfriend grew up ridding horses. She had the nicest figure, lots of curves, but she was not over weight. One day the fashion industry will start using full figured woman as models, but for now the style is the anorexic, "she must be taking speed", look.

Don't know why except maybe it's easier to fit clothes on them? Maybe? I prefer women who are a more filled out, even to being a little bit chubby. Think of the depiction of women in the work of artists from the renaissance like Rubens and Titian, or even a later artists like Rembrandt. His wife was one of his favorite models and she was definitely a babe.

Not at all, some of the victorias secret models are good looking, but they actually have a chest and curves, most models are just sticks and it is sickening.
