struts are what control the movement between your car and your frame/ chassy. the idea is that when there is a bump in the road the strut will asorb the impac thus making the car move as little as posible. there are several reasons why cars need struts. one is simply for the comfort the driver. the other the other is to protect the car from the abuse from the road. now the spring looking thing that is surrounding the strut is called a coil over. this controls the spring rate of the car. the looser the spring the more it will absorb. for example a cadilac will have very lose springs which gives it a smoother ride, combined with the a more asorbent strut it gives it a very comfortable ride. now with performence vehicles are tuned to be more stiff. this improves the handling of the cars. by doing so the damping force of the struts is made to be stiffer and asorb the road a lot less. then the coilovers are adjusted to fit the strut. coilovers can also control the hight of the vehicle. performance vehicles like to be lower to the ground for a lower point of gravity (making the car respond quicker). these cars are not used for comfort. if you think about it this way the more you compress a spring the less it is going to move. with a real streched out spring you will absorb more (it will also make bounce several times when hiting a bump, which makes it handle worse), while a compressed spring wont. to sum it up struts and coilovers (springs) do in a way connect the body of the car to the wheels. the next questions you should concider asking might be: what is a chassy, how does it work, what diffrent kind of ways can it be adjusted.

Maybe. Take a close look at that thing. If it's got a pivot on the top and held solidly to the suspension at the bottom with two bolts or some similar arrangement, it's a strut. If it attaches with a pivot at both the top and the bottom, this is the strut's close cousin, a coil-over shock absorber - and the car doesn't have true struts, at least not at that end.

the correct name for it is called a macpherson strut.
