The current administration has given a directive to social security to deny almost all requests for disability benefits. This makes everyone appeal. It is ruthless and not based on the facts of the claim. You will have to appeal and may need an attorney.

The current administration has nothing to do with receiving SS. If a person is truly disabled, then s/he can receive disability. Problems like being overweight or having a bad knee don't count. My wife had to take a medical retirement. She didn't even apply for SS, but since she was a governmental employee, SS received her medical paperwork. Then, they called her and got the names and phone numbers of her doctors. Finally, Soc. Sec. contacted my wife and told her that she qualified for SS disability. She didn't have to appeal, she didn't even apply for it on her own. But, she would rather be well and work normally and contribute to society than to be ill, disabled, and a user of others resources.

No it's not a myth, but it takes an act of God and congress. My husband became disabled in 1996 and it took 7 years and 3 appeals for him to get his disability and then, because he did what SS told him to do and it didn't work, he lost all of his backpay. They say that they will decline it at least twice to see how serious you are about it. Very frustrating system!

You can get social security payments because you are disabled and unable to work. That fact is not a myth. However, you can not become disabled from receiving social security.

Yes, you can if you have a disabling disease. SSA will not make it easy. They want to say "NO" to everyone.
