I live in a duplex. The lady that lives downstairs has Roadrunner High Speed Internet. My laptop has wireless capabilities. If her system or whatever isn't locked, would i be able to pick up a signal and get internet from her?

Possible if they have a wireless modem with no security set up on it. However, it is illegal to "steal" another person's internet.

Are you able to pickup her Internet? It depend if she's sharing the connection around her part of the duplex with a wireless router. Here's how you can tell if she is and if you can share her connection:
- Assuming you have Windows, look on the lower right of your screen (in the 'SysTray') for a little picture of a computer with two curved lines coming from the right side. (if you can't find this icon you can also control your wireless network connections by going to the Control Panel and then Network Connections using the Start button in the lower left of the screen)
- double click on the wireless network icon
- click on the 'View Wireless Networks' button on the bottom of the window
If there is a network listed, it has one or more green bars, and is labeled 'Unsecured Wireless Network' (meaning it isn't locked), then you'll be able to piggyback on her Internet connection.

Only if your neighbour is broadcasting her signal through her house. Just turn on the centrino and the program will show you any networks it can find. Download (free) Netstumbler which will identify and classify all wifi networks in its reach. It also shows if they are open or restricted networks.
You could always ask your neighbour to plug her feed into a cb3 or quality wap11 device so that she can be wireless indoors and you can leach off her signal too.

It relies upon on what form of router they have, if it extremely is a low end kind it would not provide off lots of a sign. so which you isn't waiting to %. up the sign on your computer, even though it they have a sturdy router it may attain your place. I actually have a Netgear RangeMax router, and that i will %. up the sign a pair properties down from my abode, even though it has 7 inner antennas for optimum selection. so as that they could desire to have a ordinary router.

You probably could...but it would be cool just to get your own..in a pinch is fine but to do it continually is like stealing cable tv or something...and you might also give up security using someone else's wireless internet connection...

Only if she has her Roadrunner modem connected to a wireless access point, however it is illegal and unethical.

One of our neighbors actually just did this to us. I happened to go into My Network places and saw all of their pictures, music, etc., on my computer. I am sure if they were aware that we'd be able to see those they would have thought twice about it.

Most likely. If she has wireless, and it's compatible with yours (Wireless-B/Wireless-G, ect) with no encryption then you will be able to. If she does have encryption then find out if it's WEP or WAP. WEP is easier to crack, but you really should consider asking her first.

yep if she is broadcasting her network, you can see her network and she hasnt changed the default password, and her signal strength is decent to your place you should be able to piggyback on her router. Not really legal but is definitly possible.

yah just select the wi-fi network with the program that runs you r wireless card, and press connect. be careful though because as soon as you connected she will be able to see your computer on her network if she goes into "my network places".
