This is one of those things widely reported on the internet by lacking in source material. Cynthia Lennon did say in her book that he hit her once, but that doesn't qualify him as a "wife-beater." The only other source I've found is Lennon's former driver, who apparently tried to blackmail Yoko Ono, said he overheard one of Lennon's sons accuse him of this. I'm not saying it's not true but where's the evidence? Seems kind of easy to make things up about a dead guy.

No that's both well documented and never denied on his part.
It's the primary reason he split with his first wife Cynthia.
Also the main reason the relationship between himself and Julian his first son, was so strained.
There is also quite a bit of anecdotal evidence, he was free with his fists with Yoko as well. Eye witness accounts and such.
Although she always defended him when questioned about this.
It's ironic that of all the music stars of the last fifty years, it should be a renowned wife beater, who is most associated with love and peace.
If nothing else it shows how fickle the music industry actually is.

I saw an interview where Cynthia said he was verbally abusive, but I don't recall him beating her.

I even read he was into child pornography, some people are not what they seem ..but hey what do I know Ive read it from a book whose author knew Mr Lennon well
I try to focus on his music and message really
