Well, you public school might have some electronic databases thhat it subsribes to. These would have scholarly articles. I would find out if your school has any, and then find out any details about jhow you would access the school's account. You could do some research there in school on the databases.

Also, the public libraries usually subscribe to electronic databases. So if you have a library card, you might be able to go through your library's website, find the page where thhe databases would be listed, and try some of them out. You would probably have to enter your library card number to get into these databases, and perhaps some other information. If you can't figure out how to get in, ask your local librarian what sources they have and for help. You might even be able to do it on your home computer without even going to the library.

A local University or Library usually has a subscription to sites where you can get those papers. My University was like that. You could also stand up in class or ask aloud if anyone has the copies or can offer a way to find them; it has worked for me a few times. If you cannot afford buying the papers or what not, I suggest talking to the professor and explaining the situation. Alternative arrangements should be able to be done.

Generally, one doesn't need to buy research papers. If you have a library, you can either read them there or borrow the journals which contain research papers in your field. If there is no library, you can often find appropriate papers online. Try http://scholar.google.com. It is a beta site that intends eventually to include all possible research papers.
