Cats are definitely different! I have a dog and a cat, and dogs are definitely more affectionate from the get go. Cats, however, are more like people. They give and receive affection, but on their terms, not yours.They are definitely more discriminating and seem to prefer solitude more than dogs do. It's funny. We desire to emulate the characteristics of dogs (unconditional love, minimal wants, general contentment) but we are really more like cats. Perhaps that's why we seem to have trouble getting along with them.

If only it were so simple. There are several breeds of dogs that are very independent (try making a Saluki fit in) and many breeds of cats that desire nothing more than to gaze adoringly at you (like a ragdoll)
However, also understand that as a pack animal, a dog is better equipped to fit in. His desire to please you emanates from his perception of you as the leader of the pack and it is in his best interests to keep you happy. A cat does not have any such makeup. A cat is with you because she chooses to be and to many people that is a more powerful expression of loyalty.
And there is another saying- God created Dogs to teach man self-acceptance because the dog will adore him no matter who he is or what he looks like. But he created Cats to teach him humility because a man can never make a cat servile.
