I'm in my 3rd year of school, I have all the generals requirements out of the way and I can't decide on my major. I'd originally wanted to do accounting, then I thought teaching (elementary), which is great and all, but I don't know if I want to deal with all the regulations and garbage teachers have to deal with, like No Child Left Behind and stuff like that. I think there's a demand for teaching and accounting. I love dealing with numbers and financial stuff, so I'm thinking I might consider accounting again. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

I would go for the accounting degree for 2 simple reasons:
1. You seem unsure of teaching as a career and enjoy numbers.
2. You can get accreditation to teach with an accounting degree whereas you can't get accreditation to do accounting with an education degree.
I suggest you to minor in education if you are able too. It'll give you that extra edge even if it takes one extra semester.

If you love dealing with numbers and financials, I would major in Economics before Accounting. A major in economics can learn accounting easily, which to me makes the major more broad, offering more job opportunities. If you want to teach, these days you can major in anything and teach. Every state has an alternative certification program that lets you start teaching before you're certified. Major in math, economics, or accounting. Get good grades (at least 2.5, 3.0 is better) and then apply to an alternative program if you decide to teach. again, majoring in elementary education pigeonholes you into teaching, where as the other majors leave doors open for other, higher paying careers. Also, you don't want to be a teacher unless you REALLY love it. You need to have calling for it. The attrition rate (people who quit) is something like 5 years. i.e. most folks are fed up with teaching in 5 years or less.

It depends on what is important to you. Teachers have a luxurious life. They get three months off in the summer, two weeks at Christmas, a week at Easter. They have a union that has a stranglehold on taxpayers and can force just about anything they want out of us. However, you do have to deal with idiot parents, bratty children, and superiors who probably care more about their job than actually teaching children.
An accounting career has many more possibilities and much more freedom. Every business needs an accountant, so the job market is fairly secure, and the salary is usually better than teaching. Accounting will allow you to develop to your fullest potential, while being a teacher will force you on a designated path where only years of service matter. Whether or not you are good at your job is irrelevant.
Basically, if you have a work ethic and are willing to better yourself throughout your career, be an accountant, and you will be rewarded. If you prefer the ability to slack, do a half-****d job, and be protected by a union, be a teacher.

I am a retired CFO/CPA. If it is money you want then you should set your sights on accounting. The only drawback is that of all professional careers, accountants per capita have the highest rate of alcoholism. A disease which I suffer from as well and which I am not proud.
There is a reason for it in that corporations continually down-size and it becomes increasingly difficult to do more with less. No other job in the organization demands as much with such horrendous deadlines.
Just a little food for thought.

i'm going to school for teaching and it's great.. You really have to step back and look where you want to be in 5 years. Find something that your really interested in. You don't want to be in a job you don't like and still paying for those freaking loans *grr loans* I love working with children and you do get great vacation. I"m sucky with math so i would chose teaching hands down. Good luck in what you do
