I want to get out of the US this summer and explore another country. I'd probably stay in hostels or something along those lines, backpacking around. Any suggestions, reference links or even books?

Well I enjoyed backpacking around Europe when I was young. I got a train pass and stayed in hostels and cheep hotels. The Let's Go Europe books are a good reference as are the Lonely Planet books. Try Hostels.com online.

The cheeper alternative is to backpack Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. I have been to Thailand and have had friends who did Vietnam and Cambodia, they are really cheep but be prepared to rough it a bit. The flights there are more expensive though. You can find extremely cheep hostels and bungilos in Thailand for sure. Again see Let's Go South East Asia and Lonely Planet books. Just get them from the library to get an idea of where you want and then buy the one you want to take with you.

Get a train ticket that you can use as many times as you want in a month or however long you are going. You can use the ticket to go between almost all of the countries. You can also use some of those tickets as ferry passes to travel to the Greek Islands and some of the other islands out there that I can't think of right now. I did this when I traveled around Europe, I can't remember the name of the ticket but you should be able to find them just by searching for train tickets in Europe. Maybe start with Travelocity.

Here is a link for cottage rentals - you can rent from 4 to 7 days - I've used them on three different occasions and they are perfect for getting to know the locals and really seeing the country. You can take public transport to the town where the cottage is located and then stay there for a few days or so before moving on to the next. Most of the cottages have washer and dryers, you can choose one that is located within walking distance of the local grocery and/or pub - check it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Buy a Eurail pass and the travel books of Rick Steves. You can't go wrong.
