Low battery. It will run the lights, but the starter takes the most current of anything it the car. It is the first to stop working. That is the problem if you are getting a repeating clicking sound. One big click indicates a bad starter. The solenoid is engaging but the starter isn't turning.

Starter might be hung. Try taping it with a hammer. An old starter, the small gear that engages the ring gear might not slide back into the housing, it'll get stuck in teeth and not release.
Tap (not beat to death) the end of the starter housing, not where the wiring connects.
This is if the low battery theory fails, of course. You can check the strength of your battery with a voltmeter.

Check the solenoid, clean battery termainals or you could have a bad starter. It takes a lot more current for a starter than it does for a light.

Your battery is almost dead. It has enough charge left to turn on lights and other electronics in the car, but not enough to start the engine.

Sounds like the alternator. Check the starter too. But, most likely it is the alternator. Also, wiggle some wires, you might have a loose wire. Or check your fuses, too! (I used to work on my own cars)
