Keep playing! You want the most awesome callouses ever on those hands. I play violin and believe me, you don't want those fingers soft. Don't even rub lotion on them...they need to be rough.

Please people this person is developing calluses on the hand that's on the fretboard pressing on the strings got it? which has nothing to do with using a pick or not ...
buy a balm or a non greasy cream and keep your hands moisturized specially your fingertips, get rid of the dead skin but not the callus, leave it alone otherwise it will hurt next time you play...also try finger ease for your fretboard it makes the strings smoother ..therefore easy on your tips

Just keep at it. After a while your fingertips will get used to it and go much harder. The more you play the more they will hurt for a while, but you will be surprised how soon your fingertips stop hurting and how much easier it is to play. The only problem is if you don't play for a while your fingertips will soften up again.

I have heard that quilters use alum powder on their fingers to toughen them. When I started quilting, I had a small callous on one finger with a blister underneath and it got punctured.
You can usually find alum with the canning/pickling supplies at the supermarket.

No, that's about par for the course, I'm afraid.. If I don't practice for a week or so, it hurts like crazy when I resume.
Basically, your fingertips will get harder and less sensistive after a while and you won't hurt, but you have to go through the hardening process before then.
It's kinda like exercising for the first time - your muscles hurt until they get used to the new activity.

Use super glue on your fingers but let it dry first or you'll end up looking daft with a six string stuck to you. Flea from the chili peppers uses it and hes cool.

A dot of superglue on each finger tip works really well. Just let it dry first!!!

You can do a couple of things. 1) soak them in warm salt water several times a day and that helps make them tough, also helps with the pain. 2) make a paste of alum powder and put on em a couple times a day for about a week.
My husband taught guitar for years and these are the suggestions he gave his students.
