I saw something a while back on TLC, Discovery, or The History Channel on currency and heard them say that you are legally allowed to make your own currency, but it is up to the place you try to use it at to actually accept it or not. I have a friend, however, who says he saw something on one of the same channels stating that you can not make your own currency. If anyone has an answer, can you leave me a link to some solid evidence. Thanks

It actually is legal. It is the same as writing an IOU. The trick is getting anyone to accept it.
There are constraints as far as design (can't make it look anything like US or any other nation's currency to avoid getting nailed for counterfieting), I can remember seeing one that was issued in Oregon by a commume that was denominated in hours of work. I see others on eBay that are intended strictly for collectors (Do a search on eBay in the World paper money category for Antarctica or Antnapolistan, just to name two current examples)

You can make your own currency, but it can't look anything like the official currency of your country (or some other country's).

I play Ultima Online. The currency is "gold pieces." Electronic Arts makes a lot of gold pieces every day -- in effect, making their own currency. People trade "gold pieces" for real dollars on EBay.

can you alone form a country? if you will answer no ,you cannot print your own currency. It will be fake and the police will look after you.

I think it is illegal to make your own currency and pass it off as real money. It is essentially worthless. I found a link where people were discussing it: http://digg.com/politics/US_Mint_Claims_NORFED_Are_Federal_Criminals
