The risk is very great. They actually have a program at http://www.oatmealmedia.net that does all of the work and the person doesn't even have to be a real hacker. They just need to use the program. I think it only works on yahoo, but i'm sure there are others like it for msn and such. Firewalls don't work against it because you are allowing yahoo to connect to your cam. The best policy is just not to do anything on webcam that you don't want the whole world to see.

A hacker has better things to do then spy on you.
"I mean the person has to know me, my Id, something about my computer, or they could just randomly chose a computer to invade?"
Exactly...
Simply keep your windows update updated (hmm) and if you have XP make sure you have service pack 2 which comes with a free firewall that will prevent a hacker from randomely testing your computer ports for any vulnerabilty. I firewall will shield you from those things.

there is a virus out there (Released in 2005) that alows a remote user to gain access to your cam regardless of if your using it or not. All they need is a pc that's on with a cam plugged in.
If you ahve windows XP you already have a firewall. Two is redundant. If you ahve a router you mostlikely hav a hardware firewall. Both (or one or the other) is enough. Just keep your system virus free!

The risk is remote - no one can just dial up your machine and see your pics. If you are worried disconnect your machine from the net.
Windows has a pretty good firewall - make sure it is switched on. Also get a virus checker (www.grisoft.com) has a good free one called avg. Also install and run spybot search and destroy weekly

They can't see your webcam unless you had a trojan horse
installed in your computer that allows him to have remote
access into your pc.
