Well you didn't specify a boy or a girl...so I will fill you in some things that could be for either :-) I have a 3 1/2 year old son and my best friend has a 4 year old girl. They seem to really like the FLOAM stuff, puzzles, Crayola color wonders finger paints, dress up outfits (doctor, police man, superman, princess, etc), play-doh, computer games, and kids music cd's. Depends on the occasion, and if they are RELATED to you,MOST people ask the PARENTS what they need or want at that young of an age...

boy stuff or girl stuff for four year olds. the boxes of toys pretty much tell you what age group they are for now.
