Yes, pirates existed. I don't know how good looking they were, but they still exist know. I adore Jack Sparrow, simply because he is Johnny Depp.

Well, in general life was pretty tough back then. Even a hundred years ago most women died in childbirth and dental health was not an option for any but the rich.
Generally people associate good looks with vigorous good health. People who live a "hard knock life" even now days do not tend to fit todays catagories of attractive.
If you look at actuall hard core gang members, gangsters, or members of biker gangs they are typically not very attractive by societies standards.
Many of them have large scars from knife and gun wounds, and are missing teeth from fights or drug use. They often have poor skin and hair quality from poor nutrition and alcohol abuse. Often they have had disease that has been untreated and have dull whites to their eyes and acne scars.
Additionally many have grown up in an abusive/ violent situation so they have mental scars as well, and they may be violent themselves. Which is never an attractive quality in a mate.
Now if you imagine these same qualities a few hundred years ago when immunizations were not yet invented, and cursory education was not available. Plus welfare to feed children did not exist...
Not a pretty picture. Very hard scrabble.

Pirates existed. Spaniards were shipping gold that they'd stolen from the Aztecs and Incas back to Spain, and the other countries wanted a cut. Officially, the pirates were bad guys. Privately, France and England loved their pirates for bringing back the doubly pilfered gold.

Hello,
Yup, pirates really DO exist, they have never gone away. It is common for sailboats to be assaulted by pirates and many times robbed or killed and their boats stolen. There are many "hot spots" around the world but it is most common around poor, lawless countries. Many times this is around Africa but it happens elsewhere as well.
It is also common for huge commercial ships to be boarded. Many times these big boats only have a few crew members on board and are robbed for any cash or food they have on hand.
Many sailboats carry crossbows in dangerous water to protect themselves. They use crossbows because firearms are not allowed in many areas and the crossbows are small and can be used conveniently in close quarters.
Tankers use their high pressure wash down hoses to repel the pirates.
I am not kidding.
Take care

Yes pirates existed and some, to this day.
I've known some young pirates, like my friend Badger.
We used to go to the docks in San Diego and he would steal other people's dingy's and we'd row around the bay and watch the sun go down.
Did I metion he's a F***n hottie?

Of course, they existed....and still exist today!
They probably weren't as pretty as Orlando Bloom -- at least, the men weren't, although there were a few female pirate captains. But most of them were convicts, runaway slaves, and others who could find no home in polite society....

Bartholomew Roberts
Title: The Great Pirate Roberts
Author: Krzysztof Wilczyński (about)
Bartholomew Roberts, referred to as the " Great Pirate Roberts", roamed the seas in the early eighteenth century. He traveled the coasts of North and South America. His reputation had grown so immense that guard ships stationed in the West Indies were reluctant to get involved with him, and even seemed to sail out of their way to avoid confrontation.
Roberts was known as a tall, dark, and attractive man, with "personal Bravery, though he applied it to such wicked purposes". He was a popinjay among his fellow pirates dressing in rich crimson waistcoat, and breeches, a hat with a red feather, and a diamond cross hanging from a golden chain around his neck. In time of action, he was known to carry two pairs of pistols at the end of a silk sling across his shoulder.
;His boldness was reflected in his reliance on the unusual, relying on the both surprising and awesome. For example he was recalled to have sailed into Trepassey in Newfoundland, in a sloop of ten guns manned by sixty men, with "black colors flying, drums beating and trumpets sounding." The crews of the twenty-two ships in anchor in the harbor, immediately withdrew from the site and fled to safety off shore.
Roberts held so much hatred for the people of the islands of Martinique and Barbados, that he created his black flag to illustrate it. On it was an image of himself holding a flaming sword in one hand, and dagger in the other. His feet resting on two human skulls. Under one the initials A.M.H., for A Marinican’s Head, and beneath the other, A.B.H., for A Barbadian Head.
Roberts career came to an end when he was killed at sea in a conflict off the coast of Africa.

Yes but they were like evil. There certainly wasn't a flying Dutchman. 8-I I don't know if there were any good looking ones. I'm not really attracted to guys from other centuries. Besides they probably smelled disgusting. :P
