You mean the noble gases? They're special because, well, they're all gases, and even more because none of them can react chemically under any normal conditions (because their valence shells are full).

The elements in the eight group are called noble gases because of their electron configuration (8 valence electrons) they do not need to react with another element to exist in nature. They are called stable gases/elements.

The electron configuration of the outer shell of the Inerts is extremely stable, and they do not react with themselves or other elements under any but very unusual conditions.

Hi. The outer electron "shell" is complete, making them very non-reactive. Fluorine will combine with one, I forget which.
