Legally, you can only ask for things that are documented. Even then, most past employers will only give you the date of hire, the date of fire and whether or not they are eligible for re-hire. Once in a while you may get lucky and find someone that is chatty and will give you more info than that, but that really is about all you can expect.

All you're able to do is be sure you create a sturdy impact on whoever you meet once you interview. it extremely is a sturdy theory inspite of the incontrovertible fact that: having a chum call, and pretending to be a potential corporation to work out precisely what's being stated. And if it extremely is significant, you are able to sue for slander.

I was always taught that when reading a reference, it is what is not included that is the most important. If it does not include, 'a good time-keeper', the person is always late. No mention of 'honesty' - the person is dishonest. If you then telephone the company who gave the reference, you can ask casually 'I notice that you did not mention 'honesty'. If the other person says nothing, you know what the answer is............... give it a try.

Legally, they're supposed to only verify dates of work. If they ask anything else, it's wrong. But among small companies, that kind of stuff goes on all the time.

you can ask what ever you want. the other employer can only legally tell you that the person worked there and the dates they were employed.

usually the questions are limited to "did she work here" and "how long" they really can't ask much nmore besides that, unless you give the HR department explicit permssion to respond to more. They are not even aloud to ask about your preformance legally... though it does sometimes happen.
