My mother purchased a car for my sister to drive for work and sis agreed to pay notes & insurance. (1st mistake...) My sister then stiffed her on the agreed monthly payments for 6 months, and failed to cover the car with full-coverage insurance...Guess next!
New car, uninsured & now totalled. As an added bonus, my sister used the tollway without the proper tag and ran up $2600 in camera fines running the EZTAG lanes. The authorities are telling my mother she is responsible because the plates comeback in her name. My mother cannot go to jail for something my sister did! She is elderly, and lives over 80 miles from the occurances. What can we do??? Please anyone with good advice, Help me keep my Mother out of jail!

Sorry hun its not your problem...your mom is either an idot or willing to pay the price. She chose to do this. Her own daughter set her up. Call you sis and ask HER what SHE is going to do. I hate to sound cold but its folks like your mom who I'm sure mean well but the truth is when they "help" nut jobs like your sister, then people like me are the ones who find them selves in a car wreck with some one who has no insurance and is never going to make it right. Do us all a favor and stop "helping" people like your sister. Otherwise you NEED to be in jail so you will stop putting the rest of us in danger.

Unless you have a pot load of cash, to bail your mom out, Your a third party sitting on the sidelines. Perhaps your mom needs to face reality when it comes to her daughter. This may be the only way for her to wake up.

So if you "help" you mom how long before you have to "help" her again? Where does it stop?

You know what your sister is like. Your mom knows what your sister is like. You know what your mom is like. If you help her, how long before you have to "help" her gain because she was busy helping your idot sister agian?

And yes your mom CAN go to jail for something you sister did because your mom let you sister use her good name to do it.

Being responsible and going to jail are not the same thing. Assuming you live in the U.S. (EZTAG lanes sound that way to me - Googling those words makes me think you are in Texas), we don't have debtor's prison. If she owes money, she has to repay money; it is that simple. Unfortunately, your mother is responsible if she bought the car. Two things:

First of all, if your mother has no money, they cannot get money out of her. Her liability will be limited to the amount that she is able to pay. Fortunately, if she is elderly, she won't find these debts hanging over her head to keep her from getting a job or credit, but you (or someone) should work out a reasonable payment plan for her.

Secondly, if your mother out of the goodness of her heart is making irresponsible financial decisions in her old age and is not able to understand the ramifications of what she does, someone needs to be appointed as a conservator for her assets, so that she can't blow through them. Suffice it to say, this person should NOT be your sister. You might want to talk to an attorney about this. If there is no money at all, there are a number of legal clinics which might help. In the L.A. area we have a place called Bet Tzedek which deals primarily with the laws which affect the elderly, or there may be a senior center which can direct you to such a place.

ur sis, need be responsible and kind enough not to allow her own elderly mom to end up in jail,...alternately,u could tell the truth in court and defend ur mom or engage a lawyer, good luck,am sure that they Will consider given ur mom'age and sister testimony,ur sister is the full responsible one and should come out clean, there were a story of this lady whose daughter used her car,and ran over someone, the mother to protect her daughter, becos she was still an studante, decided to take all the blame, and went to court, but finally the truth surface, and the daughter was punished instead, and the mother fined for givin false testimony,

Well saidly if your mother put it all in here name that's all the courts are going to look at! really sucks that family would be the first to screw you over!
i don't think your mother will go to jail she may just get stuck with court fees and large cost!
the only thing your mother can do in her defence is to sue your sister!
Well i wish you and your mother the best of luck!
don't get to stressed about it it will work it self out!
it sucks but don't worry yourself or your mother to death cuz nothing is worth that! not any amount of money!
so smile and do what you got to do!
Good luck!
my heart is with you!
Mad luv

she gets a attorney, yet legally she continues to be required to pay the advantageous because's legally her automobile. with a bit of luck she has a credit card she will pay the $2,six hundred with. She ought to take your sister to courtroom and function her wages garnished for the bills (digital camera expenses and vehicle own loan money). that's a nasty mess she's in. and now her credit is going to be ruined if she stops paying the automobile own loan on the motor vehicle (that keeps to be no longer paid off & totalled).

Don't lend out money to your kids. Unless you absolutely can afford to pay the outcome in case your child cannot. As for the fines, maybe she can pay them in payments. Or call a lawyer for advice.

Sounds like your mom ruined herself financially. I have a really hard time believeing that this is the first time your sister has been irresponsible. I hate to say it, but your mom is the one that allowed this to happen.
