I haven't joined because I don't have the money or time to, but I would probably prefer to join a liberties group that doesn't take some of the more random cases that the ACLU does; something like the EFF.
The ACLU gets a bad reputation because they will defend anything that even slightly might go against a person's civil liberties. While many of the things they stand up for are good, imo,(seperation of church and state, free speech, etc.) the off the wall ones give them a bad name. (also the fact that they stand up to the president gives them a bad name with some, but thats another story).
In general, they do deserve support as without groups like them, we would have no freedoms worth fighting for.

Because the ACLU speaks out against a whole lot of other stuff that they ought to stay out of.
