Why are so many people on this site obsessed with daddy long legs?Honestly,I've never seen anything like it.But they do have a purpose, otherwise they wouldn't be here.As I understand it ,they are scavengers and eat decaying insect and vegetable matter.I think they are cute and they're completely harmless.I have loads of them in my yard. They also are a food source for toads, frogs, birds.spiders and other insects. And they are NOT spiders,as they have only a one-segmented body and do not produce silk;they are in a class by themselves. They are also known as Harvestmen,as they are most abundant in the fall,or at harvest-time.

I know this sounds snobby of me, but the commonly called Daddy Long Legs are actually called Harvestmen. The actual Daddy Long Legs are the spiders with the long legs that you can most likely find in your basement, amazingly called Cellar Spiders.

What is its purpose? Hmmm... Like most arachnids, they eat harmful bugs and insects like Aphids, like mentioned before, and also to remind us of the best Sci-Fi short story ever, Sandkings!

The purpose of a daddy long legs is to frighten young children, who think they are flying spiders ! To us more sophisticated adults, they are merely an annoyance buzzing away aimlessly in the corner of the room or around your computer screen when you are trying to answer serious questions like this!!

Did you get this question off the television?

They're around because it t'is the season to have daddy long legsy things flying around. Their purpose is unknown, but they're alive and they're annoying. Is that a good enough purpose?
