I got hired by an accounting firm. I was supposed to start work in July. I asked for an extension so that I could study for the CPA exam. The firm gave me the time off I requested. Now, I start in October, and I realize that I still NEED more time to study...I am afraid to ask for another extension of time off because they might get tired and fire me, even before I start. They were already very generous with giving me the extension of time off. Studying for the CPA exam will be harder with my work obligation on top of that...It is very time consuming...I want to start work with a clear mind thinking I passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam before I start....any suggestions for me?

What's the matter? You didn't like the answers you got when you posted this message a little while ago? It appeared the consensus was that you squandered the time you already delayed and should not expect a company to wait forever. Your name gives you away. You're lucky they let you wait this long. If you want the job, don't push your luck. You're just going to have to go straight home and do your studying evenings and weekends and give up wasting time on your Playstation. You should not expect the world to revolve around you.

Sorry hon but you need to just suck it up and work really hard until you pass the test. Asking for another extension will jepordize your job. I think they have been more then understanding. You are just going to have to cut out other aspects to make time for work and study. Don't hang out with friends as much keep your socializing to a minimum. Learn how to optimize your time. Read on the bus or in the cab on the way home.

Well...there is only one option...Ask them for another extension...Explain to them that u still need time to prepare for ur exams....if you dont u wont be able to do justice to either...neither ur job nor ur exams...when ur asking for extension make sure u put ur point across as convincingly as possible...tell them that u would like to give justice to ur work by finishing off with ur exams first and then joining work without exams tensions and a clear head.....also make sure u tell them that this is the last time u are asking for extension stating when you would join work again and that there would be no more extensions in the future!!!

Depends to much the way that you will ask the extention.. everything is possible and you can get anything you want if you can show to the others what beneffits they will get with it......

Think in the words that you will say carefully ... do not explain to much about you.. in business and life.. nobody care for the others, and even can be considerate a waste of time .

if you cant do it with inteligence... choose your priorities.. if you decide just study... you wont lose nothing if you ask for the extension....

They've already invested time in you and it is in their best interest that you pass. Describe to your prospective boss the situation and say you need more time. This is not the tax crunch, so it should be OK. Ask for at least 1 week longer than you need so you won't get caught short.

Tell them youre sorry, but you feel you need more time and if they dont want to hire you, you will understand. I am sure other accounting firms will hire you when you are ready. Good luck!

I would ask. We deal with this situation all the time here. Depends on the hiring manager. Some will be ok....some will be ball busters.....Just ask and listen to the response?
