Gay men and women can hold political office and do. Check Barney Frank. He's been a Massachusetts Representative to the US Congress for many many years. He's not the only one...

Maybe you are asking about politicians who still hides in the closet. In San Francisco we have lots of them and they garner many votes most of the time. Generally, we already have them and they are doing good. There are only some parts of the country and political party that do not like to see them admitting it in the open for fear that it may affect the people's votes.

I really have no idea. When the governor of NJ came out; I was really upset that he felt he needed to step down. There was more to it than just being gay as I later found out. He was lying to his wife, and cheating on her, and hired his lover to be his assistant. That just goes against morality; so he stepped down

There are gays in Congress a gay Govenor in New jersey ( I believe) and a few gay legislators in my very anti gay state of Utah.
