In a word, gravity. Gravity only seems to pull down relative to us but it is actually pulling us "in" towards the center of the Earth. Thats why we don't fall off.

Check this out! If Earth were to rotate 2 hrs faster, let's say from 24 hrs/day to 22/hrs/day, we would weigh only half! The airplanes would burn lot less fuel, cars too. It would be easier to launch a rocket to space and humans would even grow taller.

On the down side, the tides would be like tsunamis, land slides would be gigantic.

Here its more. . . With a rotation period of 10hrs/day the Earth will swell to 1.3 times its size. The planet will be covered with thick clouds, huge storms and gigantic waves. Definitely you don't want to live in that planet.

On the other hand if the rotation were to slow down to 72 hrs/day the Earth will shrink to 3/4 of its size the volcanic activity and earthquakes will be constant. We would weight too much to stand up and it would be imposible for airplanes or rockects to take off.

Everything has been spinning like this for a long time and the bumps etc. have happened a long time ago. I worked for N.A.S.A. and used a star chart that was done in the late 1800 and none of the stars had moved in that time. Things are very far apart and all the other planets behave like a meatier deflector.
