Yes, both Orange and Virgin "marry" thier phones to their own sim cards. There are plenty of unlocking services in shops all over the place, who charge from £5 to £15 to sim unlock a phone, no questions which would free it up for your sim card.

I have to say though, that you would be better going to Orange and using their service as both pay as you go and contract are cheaper to run than o2. It is worth going on contract with orange as they have some fantastic deals on with loads of free cross network minutes and texts. They are affordable too, and they will taylor your needs to the right package. Also, your phone is free and you get free upgrades every year.

Over the years I have been with o2, Vodaphone and Tmobile and finally Orange, but have stuck with Orange for five years now as their service is second to none, they fall over themselves to help you, they reward you for loyalty and they will sort out any problems. If you are worried about keeping your o2 phone number, you can still change provider by getting hold of your PUK number, either on your original sim card or phone pack, or if you call o2, they have to give it to you. You give this to the new provider and they can then give you their sim, with your number on it, I think it does take a few days though.
