My motherboard and cpu was upgraded to AMD-64 3500+ on ECS Mobo running 800Mhz DDR2 dual processors. Is WinXP 64-bit ed necessary? Can't I run WinXP Pro (32-bit ed)? My old HDD FAT32 doesn't seem to boot on the new setup. I didn't think re-formatting to NTFS was necessary. Is my MBR corrupt? I don't know, it won't post and I get a BSOD. There's a message but it flickers out so fast I can't get the codes. Thanks ahead of time.

no u dont need to run a 64 bit OS, but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a 64 bit machine doesnt it?
thr r a lot of apps that can run 64
yes during OS install formatting as NTFS is necessary
windows made this part of the OS starting with 2000 i guess
FAT16/32 will not work
so reformat and install

I'd suggest slaving it, backing it up, and formatting it in NTFS

No a 64 bit OS is not required yet.

Also, before doing much on the drive use scan disk or another scanner to ensure it's integrity

i have amd x2 core 4200+ and i use the 32bit windows xp which works fine ......there is little benefit at present having the 64 bit windows as few applications/games are written in 64 bit ....

this will soon be obselete anyway with Vista ...

i suggest you do re format with NFTS
