It was considered a good rate to use, since it can reproduce 22,050 Hz which is above the normal human hearing range. Indeed, your CDs will sound acceptable, although some people with good hearing will find that the highest frequencies aren't really accurate, and may hear hiss artifacting from the "stair step" sample quantization. CDs are recorded at 16-bit, 44.1 KHz, stereo.

Actually yes...
According to Nyquist's theorem, we hear at about a maximum frequency of 20kHz (or 20,000 cycles a second), and he states that to correctly quantize (sample a signal at a rate to give a quality that is easily distinguishable to the human hear) it should be done at 2 times the highest maxi um frequency to be sampled.
So if f (max) = 20kHz;
Then f (sample rate) = 2 x f (max);
Which gives: 2 x 20.10^3 = 40.10^3
Therefore we sample at or around 40kHz.
However, this does not take into account the bit depth of sampling.
And if your lucky enough to own an SACD player (like me): They are encoded / sampled at 2048kHz....and sound much better (especially if you have a 'revealing sound system').

Has to do with the modulation of the audio, and bandwidth, also as previously mentioned STF
