our family doctor detected a problem with my wife's liver, which she says is oversized: 49. is this serious?

An over sized anything should be monitored. It may be something that works itself out. Regardless of its severity, I'm sure your wife's doc will continue to monitor her. Any sudden changes in how your wife feels should be relayed to her doc immediately!

First take it very serious! Second see another doctor for second opinion. Third do it quickly!

My wife was 48 and had symptoms related to her stomach, liver and doctors at one of the best medical facilities in st. Louis would not listen to her about how she felt. They did all sorts of tests and said it was nothing but enlarged liver. Doctors assured us both nothing to worry about, just monitor. Ten days later she died.

After the autopsy, she had liver disease, died of heart failure due to complications of liver disease! I have never been so angry at a group of people in my life. We were married 29 years, dated 4 years before that. The doctors are indignant in listening to suggestions from patients, so thank to them my best friend and wife is gone!

So RUN don't WALK to a second opinion, and find out how this can be dealt with. Don't take a generic answer like we did, destroy my wife's life and I am still fighting depression over the whole ordeal.

It can develop into a serious problem. I hope not though. Did the doctor determine why the liver is enlarged? Is this genetic or did it happen because of illness or medications? The doctor should have said a lot more or is she still doing further tests? Doctors owe us answers to our questions. Have your wife ask and and make sure the doctor answers thoroughly. If she is not forthcoming with the answers, then maybe it is time to see another physician.
