When you have your car aligned, the front tires, sometimes the back also, are set at specific angles provided by the manufacture. This procedure assures that your car runs straight and true and that the tires get the best possible wear combined with regular tire rotations. Your tires can be knocked out of alignment by hitting a big pothole, hitting a curb hard, anything that would strike the tires hard.

An alignment allows your car to move in a straight line and keeps your tires from wearing out earlier than they should. In other words traveling down the highway let the wheel go and your car should travel forward in a straight line by itself, after a few seconds your car should gradually move to the right of the lane, kinda drift to the right, this is a safety reason as if you fall asleep your car will drift off so as not to endanger anyone else. Depends on your state laws. As per the tires, if your alignment is off your tires will not wear correctly and you could end up with the tire becoming bald on one side or the other before the rest of the tire has had a Chance to wear the same which could lead to bad traction and hydroplaning. If you get an alignment it should correct all these problems also if you have a steering wheel that likes to sit at the right or left instead of straight you can have the mechanic fix this and also tighten your steering or loosen it for more or less play during turns. Hope this helps-CHEERS

The front of your car becomes unaligned over time .. by crossing railroad tracks .. or other things that make the front of your car go "bump" .. An alignment straightens out the front of the car and if you have it done.. it makes it safer to drive your car, and it also saves your front tires from going bad quickly. Good Luck ! :)
