The first hurricane with a male name was Bob in 1979. That name wasn't retired until 1991 so it was also used in 1985, due to a repeating list of hurricane names.

That would 1978's Hurricane Fico, in the Eastern Pacific. For some reason, men's names were introduced onto the Eastern Pacific lists for tropical storm names in 1978, but not onto the Atlantic lists until 1979. The first Atlantic male named Hurricane was 1979's Hurricane Bob. It should be noted that "Able" is not the man's name "Abel," but a word used to signify the letter A in radio communications.

FYI:

Alternating male and female names were first used to name Atlantic Basin hurricanes in 1979. This was also the first year that French and Spanish names, as well as English, were used. The first three male names used, Bob, David and Frederick have all been retired because they did tremendous damage. Frederick and David were retired because of the damage they did in 1979. Bob was retired after a hurricane by that name hit New England in 1991.
