Ya know, I've wondered that very thing all my life. I first tried to satisfy my self that what he was carrying for a head did the trick, but he threw that at Crane and still kept going. The only thing I can think of now is, it was in the script.

HE ACTUALLY HAD A HEAD. HE WAS CALLED THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN BECAUSE HE NEVER GOT ANY HEAD. HE WAS TO BUSY RIDING A HORSE
