I rode one the other day and really couldn't believe how gutless it truly is. I mean, my Road King is a total slug compared to practically everything on the street today, but the 883 Sportster is like a Schwinn with a moped engine taped in the frame and tassels on the handle bars. I think my leaf blower puts out more than the 45 horsepower these things put out. I truly don't know how my friends at Harley can, with a straight face, put their name on this product. I guess its a good thing about half of the parts are made overseas.

Never been on an 883.I've got an FLSTSC myself, but I do not think Sporties are for chicks.Let's face it,the center of gravity is too high.Even on the Low models the weight is still up higher than on a Low Rider,Springer or a Street Bob. Any of the aforementioned bikes would be better for a woman. Now,back to the 883.It's an entry level bike for people to get hooked on motorcycles and Harley Davidson in particular. So get off your high horse and just be glad that people are riding!

The 883 doesn't have as much power as the 1100 (1986 and 1987 model) or the 1200, but that engine is quick. You can upgrade a Sporty cheaper than a Big Twin. The cost will also be less. The 883 has lower gearing than the 1200 so you should be able to get the little machine to move.

Well, yes... I have to agree that it is. But, I would say that about any motorcycle that you adorn with tassels and leather trinkets and shiny chrome baubles. There's little argument from anyone out there when it comes to other bikes being faster, more reliable, more technologically advanced, etc., but 45 hp from an 883 engine is pathetic.

And I'm not sure why everyone loves to give you so much grief. You are the ultimate Harley owner. You wear goofy leather costumes that make you look like the Village People, you stand by your junky bike, even after putting close to $30k into it, and you crap all over anything that doesn't have the HD logo on it. I'm just happy that you recognize the shortcomings of the HD line.

its supposed to be a tuner. There are a load of kits out there to make it a 1200, and even a 1500 with some crankcase work. that said, the same engine is in the buells, which hold the world records in everything they qualify for, plus, they did the best a new bike has ever done in the indy 200. they placed an average of 14th, making them the fastest, on average, of any of the bikes there.

Oh, and your forgeting that the world speed record is held by a harley powered bike, which hit 329mph.

The thing about the 883 is it looks the same as a 1200 hotrod and can be upgraded to the same specs and performance. In stock form it is still faster than most cars, and much less expensive. What it is, is a entry level Harley Davidson with price to match. You can get a new one for $7K to $8K and a nice used one for less the $5K

Harley manufacturing has built some decent bikes too Willy. Here's a little history for you, along with a great sound file of a well tuned Harley at idle.

I thought it would be a good starter bike for me because all my stupid guy friends told me so. Me being a "chick" and all. I knew I shouldn't have listened to a man. I have a Fat Boy now and should have started off with that. So, No, a sporty is not necessarily a chick bike. Why do you give a crap what someone else rides anyway?

Well I can tell by your writing that you just have a Road King poster on your bedroom wall, Harley t-shirt & your di*k in your hand. You wouldn't know the first thing about riding much less starting a motorcycle. You know what we call people like you?
F***kin' Wannabe's, that's right ya puke!!!!!

I think it's either made for a really small framed man or for a female. I also see a lot of men on Honda Shadows. I don't know maybe it's wrong for me to think that way but I think if you're a man you have to leave those bike for women or young kids that don't want to get their heart broken if they destroy their bike in a wreck. That's just my opinion. I LOVE MEN ON BIG BIKES.
