The courthouse is a facility that houses courtrooms where judges preside over cases to see that they are resolved. Cases can be civil or criminal. A civil case is whether or not a civil wrong has been done, such as a car accident or medical malpractice agains a doctor. A criminal case is where somebody has broken the law. If an individual is found guilty of a serious crime, he or she is sent directly to jail. So, the courthouse contains courtrooms where legal business is conducted.
