Bats do not form cocoons; only insects do. They also don't typically build nests, instead occupying existing spaces like tree hollows, caves, or disused buildings. You may have simply seen a bat hanging upside down with its wings wrapped around itself.

the only bat that cocoons is the dreaded cocooning bat of Tanzania. it has a wing span of 14 inches. unlike most other bats it has a really long snoot which it uses expertly to get ants from ant mounds. it's main predator is the orange footed baboon of tanzania. the orange footed baboons are famous for their fruit throwing. as this is how they hunt, squirrels, sloths, cocooning bats, and whooping cranes.

There are some birds that have nests that hang, such as orioles, but you most likely just saw a bat. They can wrap their wings around themselves so that is probably what you saw.

plus others.
Contact your local ornithologist (That's a bird specialist) to confirm what kind of birds around the area make hanging nests.
