MID-LIFE CRISIS STARTS WHEN THE BODY CHEMISTRY BEGINS TO CHANGE, AND LESS TESTOSTERONE/ESTROGEN IS PRODUCED.
IT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL DIFFERENTLY, AND IT REMINDS THEM THAT THEY ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO ENJOY THEIR LIFE, AND TO DO AND ACCOMPLISH THINGS. MANY WANT TO FEEL LIKE THEY "STILL GOT IT" AS FAR AS BEING ATTRACTIVE TO THE OPPOSITE SEX, OR APPRECIATED.
MANY MEN OVERCOMPENSATE BY INVESTING MONEY AND TIME TO SUPERFICIAL WAYS OF REASSURING OTHERS OF THEIR MASCULINITY, PROWRESS, AND VERILITY. THESE THINGS ARE USUALLY MATERIAL THINGS LIKE THE RED SPORTSCAR, TANNING, AND A NEW WARDROBE. SOMETIMES IT IS HAVING AN AFFAIR, OR FLIRTING WITH REALLY YOUNG WOMEN. IT IS ALL SELF-SERVING TO THE MAN'S EGO. HE WANTS TO PROVE TO OTHERS HE IS STILL STRONG, POWERFUL, ATTRACTIVE, AND MANLY.
MANY WOMEN OVERCOMPENSATE BY INVESTING MONEY AND TIME IN THEIR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. THEY SOMETIMES GET PLASTIC SURGERY, TANNING, AND NEW CLOTHES MEANT FOR YOUNGER WOMEN. THEY DO AND SHOW APPROVAL-SEEKING BEHAVIORS LIKE MEN DO, BUT MORE GEARED TO THEIR SEXUAL DESIRABLILTY.
IN A PARTNERSHIP OR MARRIAGE, IT LASTS ONLY AS LONG AS THE PERSON TAKES TO ACCEPT THEIR AGE AND CHANGES OF LIFE FOR THEMSELVES.
A SUPPORTIVE PARTNER IS WISE TO RETURN TO THE DAYS OF FLIRTING, DATING, AND TRYING TO WIN THE PERSON OVER. ADMIRING THEM FOR THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, WISDOM, AND EXPERIENCE HELPS.....
BUT WHAT IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO IS PERSONAL ACCEPTANCE.

It depends on what triggered it. Many "midlife crises" are really reactions to events that happen to occur in midlife, such as job loss or divorce. How long they last depends on curing the symptoms (i.e., new job) and / or psychological resiliance. The relatively few people who suffer from a more existential ("my life is meaningless") crisis often take longer to get through to the other side -- think one to two years.

There really is no such thing as a midlife crisis.
People all go through normal changes at various ages, but mid life is no different than any other times.
If you have been through a lot of changes and need to sort them out see a psychologist.
